Alicante businessman arrested for paying illegal worker 300 euros a month
The undocumented immigrant worked 16 hours a day in an Alicante city hotel and was forced to eat leftover scraps
A 53-year-old businessman has been arrested by the National Police in Alicante accused of a crime of human trafficking and labour exploitation. He reportedly employed a young man without any visas or permits to work in his hotel, 16 hours a day, for 300 euros a month.
The alleged exploiter met the young Algerian man at a training course that he taught during the summer and quickly took advantage of the boy’s vulnerable situation and rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. Aside from the 50-hour week at the hotel, the youngster was also forced to take care of the businessman’s elderly relative on the side, cleaning her house and tending to the garden.
Police were told that the businessman paid the worker 400 euros per month in high season, 300 in the winter, and deducted 100 euros from this paltry wage for accommodation.
The victim’s working conditions were, unsurprisingly, far from ideal, and he was only allowed to eat leftover food from the plates of hotel guests. Through the course of his work day, he told police he was frequently subjected to insults, humiliation and threats of being returned to Algeria.
