ARCHIVED - Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela set to undergo 70M euro extension
The Valencian government's Ministry of Health will put the contract out to tender next week
The Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela is set to undergo a major 70 million euro expansion and refurbishment which is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
During a visit to the Palacio del Marqués de Rafal in Orihuela earlier this week, President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, explained that the hospital extension is scheduled to begin before the end of the year and will take 30 months to complete.
The project will include the construction of two new buildings which will increase the surface area by 40%; an additional 16,700 m2, and will be the largest undertaken in Alicante province, ahead of the 60 million euro extension and refurbishment of Marina Baixa Hospital which recently got underway.

Once completed, the building will also house the Orihuela Water Extremes Centre, the Vega Renhace office, the Marquisate archives and a cultural centre. Public open days are planned in the future.
In the last 12 months, Vega Baja Hospital has been blighted with operational issues. Earlier this year, a miscalculation by the Ministry of Health left staff unable to "function properly" prompting strike threats.
According to the workers' union CCOO Orihuela, the health department made an error in calculating the size of the hospital, omitting 2,800 m2 of the facility from the plans, leaving the cleaning team understaffed.
