Two more tourists die on Costa Blanca beaches
The German holidaymakers drowned at Los Arenales in Elche
The beaches of Alicante are developing a deadly reputation before the summer has even properly begun, with more people drowning on the Costa Blanca than ever before. On Monday June 10, two tourists lost their lives on Carabassí beach in Los Arenales del Sol in Elche, adding to this horrendous death toll.
A 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, both German tourists, were pulled unconscious from the surf at around 1.15pm. Several units from the Local Police, National Police and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Before reinforcements arrived, lifeguards on duty tried their best to revive the couple. Once on the beach, sources explain that “the Urgent Medical Care Service (SAMU) and the SVB health team continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques, but there was no response and they confirmed the death of the man and the woman.”
A post-mortem will now be carried out to determine the cause of the drownings.
It has been noted by the emergency response team, however, that at the time the holidaymakers ran into difficulty, a red flag was flying on the Elche beaches of Los Arenales del Sol due to the choppy water and treacherously high waves.
These latest drownings are sadly added to four deaths on a Guardamar del Segura beach and one death in Benidorm last week.
So far this June, the waters of Alicante have claimed more than one life for each day of the month.
According to the experts, there are several reasons for this tragic death toll, including a certain irresponsibility of some swimmers and a lack of knowledge of the beaches and the behaviour of the currents and waves.
However, several of the incidents in the last week or so occurred on beaches where the lifeguard services haven’t yet started up for the summer season.
José Luis Hernández Oliva, Red Cross beach coordinator in Guardamar, explains that “summer has started earlier than other years” and that most of the victims are males aged over 60 years old who are spending the summer in the province of Alicante.
