ARCHIVED - Two people hospitalised after toxic ammonia leak at ice factory on the Costa Blanca
Firefighters evacuated the factory in Valencia province's Gandia Port following a hazardous gas leak
Two employees were hospitalised following an ammonia leak at an ice factory in Gandia Port on Monday November 1, after becoming trapped inside the plant.
Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium received a warning at 12.24pm that there had been an anhydrous ammonia leak at the industrial unit and four fire crews were sent out, supported by two ambulances and medical teams.
Once on the scene, firefighters focused on containing the leak and rescuing the two workers trapped in a "difficult access area", before they were taken to a hospital in Gandia with a "guarded" prognosis. A resident living nearby required assistance at the scene, but didn't require further medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the leak, located in a 150 litre canister in a machine room within the ice manufacturing area, was stemmed and the factory was ventilated.
Just before 12.30pm, the Valencia Port Authority activated its Internal Emergency Plan in Phase Blue, and the regional government's Emergency Coordination Centre activated the External Emergency Plan in phase 0, which whilst being serious enough to pose a threat indicates the risk is of "very localised damage".
However, people living in and around Gandia Port were advised to close all windows and doors and remain inside as a precautionary measure due to the threat of a possible ammonia cloud.
Local Police also closed all accesses to the port and public spaces and terraces were evacuated.
According to the Gandia Town Hall, the "emergency operation" was dealt with by 2pm after measurements taken by the provincial fire brigade confirmed there were "no dangerous traces of ammonia or gases in the air".
