ARCHIVED - Two dead and one injured in clan shooting at cemetery on the Costa Blanca
Gunshots were fired at Torrent cemetery in Valencia on Monday morning November 1 - All Saints' Day of remembrance
A 45-year-old man has died from a gunshot wound and another, aged 79, from a heart attack during a "gypsy clan" shooting at Torrent cemetery on Monday morning, November 1, a day in which Spain commemorates the dead.
A 20-year-old man, son of the victim who was shot dead, sustained a bullet wound to the leg and is in hospital in a "serious condition".
According to police sources, the man who died of a heart attack was not involved in the shooting and was at the cemetery visiting his deceased relatives.
As soon as the alert was received at 10.20am, several units of the Torrent Local Police and the National Police were scrambled to the scene and the area was closed off.
Forensic police and the judicial authorities have been gathering "evidence and clues" this morning, but early investigations indicate "the deceased who died by gunshot and the wounded man belong to the well-known Bocanegra gypsy clan which has been involved in a shootout with another clan".
According to police, who are investigating what triggered the fatal attack, this is not the first time the two families have been involved in a violent clash.
Torrent Town Hall has since confirmed that the cemetery is once again open to the public who wish to pay their respects to loved ones, and sent a message of "calm", assuring residents that a "large police operaton is underway to locate the perpetrator or perpetrators of the shooting".
