ARCHIVED - Tragedy as pensioner drowns at Javea beach on the Costa Blanca
The tragedy happened at El Arena beach in the Marina Alta comarca of Alicante province.
A 70-year-old woman was pulled unconscious from the sea at Javea's El Arena beach on Wednesday, June 2, the fourth person to drown on the Costa Blanca in two weeks.
Alicante Emergency Coordination Service, (CICU) received a call at around 5pm and a Basic Life Support (BLS) and SAMU ambulance were sent to the beach.
The BLS arrived first and medics began basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, before the SAMU medical team took over using more advanced techniques. Sadly there was no response and the woman died at the scene.
A post mortem will be carried out to determine exactly what happened.
This is the fourth drowning since-mid May in the Alicante province on the Costa Blanca after an 88-year-old man drowned while swimming at Racó de El Albir beach on Sunday, May 30, just days after a 60-year-old German man drowned while swimming at l'Ampolla beach in Moraira on Wednesday, May 26.
And tragically, a 75-year-old man lost his life at Racó del Conill cove in Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa in Valencian) on May 18.
