ARCHIVED - Torrevieja prepares its beaches for people with reduced mobility
The coastline in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, has undergone accessibility improvements over the last couple of weeks
Soaring temperatures have seen an influx of visitors to Torrevieja beaches recently and with summer just around the corner, the town hall is getting its coastline prepared for the high season.
Over the last week or two, the local authority's Department of Beaches and the Environment has erected pergolas for people with reduced mobility and adapted showers.
And in addition to the designated areas offering shade for wheelchair users and people with other mobility issues, decking runs from the edge of the beaches, alongside the pergolas and down to the sea front.
This week, the Town Hall also approved the drawing up a report into the redevelopment of Los Locos Beach promenade, at a cost of 73,000 euros. The report is expected to take up to six months, and "the very necessary works in one of the important urban beaches in Torrevieja to considerably improve the current image of this promenade" is expected to start before the end of the year.
Tragedy struck Playa del Cura in Torrevieja this week when a 76-year-old man was pulled from the sea unconscious on Wednesday morning, May 18, before sadly passing away despite the efforts of paramedics. The drowning has prompted another warning to bathers only to swim in areas where there are lifeguards and if the sea conditions are not too rough.
