ARCHIVED - Torrevieja plans to plant a tree for every newborn
The 'Our Roots' project would see a tree planted for every baby born in the municipality in the Vega Baja comarca of Alicante province.
A tree will be planted for every newborn registered in Torrevieja if a new green initiative is approved later this month.
The aim of the 'Our Roots' project is to "make the municipality greener" whilst "strengthening a sense of belonging within the community".
As part of the initiative, the family of the newborn would be given a certificate with the child's details along with information about the tree, and where and when it was planted.
A plaque will also be placed at the foot of the tree with the child's name and date of birth to raise awareness and "promote a culture of care and protection of Torrevieja's natural environment".
The idea is that "the child's birth would be linked to the tree, symbolising taking root in Torrevieja".
The plantings will be made once or twice a year, and the species of tree will be chosen by the local authority, depending on the time of year and the area chosen.
