ARCHIVED - Torrevieja schools welcome 400 Ukrainian students
Children and young people are studying at the centre of the Ukrainian Association of Torrevieja and Salvador Ruso public school
Around 400 Ukrainian children and young people have begun or will soon start studies at two educational centres set up to support the humanitarian effort following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Association of Torrevieja centre was established for this purpose a couple of weeks ago, and now classes at Salvador Ruso public school have been opened to cater for the growing number of children who have arrived since the beginning of the conflict.
Of the 400 students, more than 250 have arrived in recent weeks from different cities in Ukraine, according to secretary of the Ukrainian association, Natalia Zhezhnyauska, who explained the students will "receive formal Ukrainian system education with appropriate books following the official subjects".

Together with Natalia Zhezhnyauska, Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, visited Salvador Ruso school on Saturday morning, March 26. Facilities have been provided for 250 students from first year primary through to secondary school age (six to 18-years-old).
Classes will be held every Saturday for refugees resident in Torrevieja as well as from surrounding towns such as Guardamar, Rojales and Los Montesinos.
A dozen Ukrainian teachers, many of them volunteers, are teaching the classes which include: culture, Ukrainian and world literature, Ukrainian language, Ukrainian history, world history, Ukrainian geography and mathematics.
Classrooms currently have a ratio of 20 students per class, but this figure is expected to rise over the next few weeks with the arrival of more Ukrainian students, all of whom will be "welcomed as Torrevejenses" (a term used for people born in Torrevieja), assured the mayor.
