Volunteers from the Torrevieja Association of Ukrainians have been given a premises at Harbaneras Commercial Centre as a base for the collection of aid for the war torn country.

The 100m2 unit is also being used to provide information to both refugees and anybody who wants to get involved in helping the humanitarian effort.

The increasing response to a call for vital emergency and basic essential aid meant the association lacked sufficient space in which to collect, organise and store donations, and so management at the shopping centre has provided "new facilities from which they can sort items and send them to where they are needed the most".

Habaneras manager, Ignacio Pámpanas, explained that the premises is located in "a strategic place in the shopping centre with very good visibility and easy access".

"In addition to providing the association with the necessary light and space for an easy distribution of the aid received, we have implemented all the necessary communication technologies so that the volunteers can carry out their work in the best possible way and attend to the greatest number of people," he added.

Likewise, staff at the shopping centre will inform the public about the collection point and assist the volunteers.

Habaneras will also set up an information point at the entrance to the commercial centre where association members will hand out information to anyone who wants to help.

Torrevieja has one of the largest colonies of Ukrainians in Alicante province with 3,216 registered at the end of February, and more than 2,300 refugees have already contacted the association for assistance (as of March 18).

According to the humanitarian organisation, "most of the people who arrive in the area fleeing the war are housed in the homes of volunteers who take them in altruistically".

However, the association has warned that, despite the large collections of food and basic necessities in the area, "food and medicines are running out too quickly".

"Most of the aid collected in Torrevieja is destined for affected countries, yet the refugees arriving in our town do not have enough food and necessities," they added.
