ARCHIVED - Thieves arrested in Torrevieja for string of burglaries in Alicante and the Region of Murcia
The robbers stole cash and jewellery from several homes in Elche, Petrer, Badajoz and Cartagena

Two thieves have been arrested in Torrevieja and sentenced to prison for committing a wave of burglaries in Cartagena, Petrer, Elche and Badajoz. In addition to the robberies, they were charged with crimes of forging official documents and driving without a licence.
The string of thefts, which had targeted dozens of homes across two provinces for some time, was ultimately brought to an end when one of the suspects was stopped at a routine Police checkpoint in Torrevieja on July 5. He handed the officer his driving licence and a Greek ID card, which the agent immediately became suspicious of.
His suspicions were well founded, as the documents were fakes and the 33-year-old Georgian man was arrested.
The plot took another twist the following morning when the suspect’s friend arrived at the Alicante police station to drop off the man’s real identity papers. The second man was extremely evasive about his own personal details and officers, smelling a rat, decided to search his car.
In it they found two forged Georgian driving licenses, a Greek identity card that had been illegally altered, two photocopies of the identity card, and also a precision weighing scales.
But that wasn’t all. A closer look revealed 14,240 euros in cash, 127 pieces of jewellery, a pair of binoculars, various tools and lock picks and plastic cards which thieves commonly use to mark the houses they plan to rob.
This 40-year-old Georgian man was immediately arrested and upon consulting their database, the Police linked the pair to several home burglaries in Elche, Cartagena and Petrer.
Continuing with the investigations, the same day the Guardia Civil carried out a search at the home of both detainees, in the town of Elche, where they seized various objects that were linked to a new robbery in the city of Badajoz.
To date, around 70 pieces of jewellery have been returned to their rightful owners but the investigation is ongoing and officers are confident that even more burglaries carried out by the suspects will come to light.
