Spate of bin fires caused by people throwing hot ashes in Alfaz del Pi containers

Alfàs Town Council has reminded people that it is not allowed to throw burning embers into the containers and has asked for residents to send them videos of anyone they see breaking the rules

In the last two weeks, no fewer than eight garbage containers have been burnt up in the urbanisations of the municipality of l'Alfàs del Pi as a result of people throwing hot ashes from their fireplaces into the bins.

This is not just illegal, but “a real danger for the community”, as stated by the Councillor for Technical Services and Public Cleaning of the town, Oscar Pérez. He has appealed for civility and citizen responsibility to prevent rubbish containers from continuing to be burnt, “in order simply not to put the lives and property of neighbours in danger”.

The worst fire was in the Captivador area, where up to four containers were burning. The fire quickly spread until it reached the fence of a house nearby. Similarly, other dustbins and large rubbish and recycling waste containers were burned for the same reasons in the urbanisations of San Rafael, Belmonte and the last one in l'Arabí.

In the face of this situation, the Town Hall has reminded people that the correct way to dispose of ashes is to wait “a few hours” until they have cooled down and, once you are sure that they have cooled down completely, put them in a bag and then in the rubbish bin.

Depositing garbage, debris, pruned tree branches and other green waste, plus other sundry waste, in places where they shouldn’t go, i.e. on “public roads” and next to the side of the bin, can lead to fines of between 600 and 1,500 euros.

L'Alfàs’s Councillor for Cleaning has asked for people “to send us photos and videos of the offenders” to allow them to catch people who are not depositing their waste in the bins properly and fine them.

There are two recycling and waste disposal points, one in l'Albir on Calle Tauró and the other in the town centre of l'Alfàs on Calle Reino Unido, where the removal of household waste that cannot be deposited in containers can be managed correctly. Specifically, they accept paper and cardboard, glass, containers, batteries, electrical and household appliances, oils, aerosols, x-rays, fluorescent lights, debris from small domestic works, household goods, scrap metal and plant remains. In short, all waste that cannot be thrown into the containers in the streets.
