WATCH: Benidorm city centre building consumed in flames
The fire caught in an alley a stone’s throw away from the famous Levante Beach
Panic ensued on the evening of Sunday January 14 in Benidorm when a fierce fire erupted in a premise situated on the ground floor of a building in La Gavina, an alleyway right on the front line of Levante Beach.
The dense smoke generated by the blaze prompted the evacuation of the building. Thankfully, no casualties were reported but the flames caused extensive material damage.
The inferno began at 10.18pm in an establishment positioned in the lower portion of the Ronda building in Benidorm, as reported by sources from the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but it had reached a “very advanced stage” by the time the personnel from the Marina Baixa fire station arrived at the scene.

According to the same sources, the raging flames quickly “engulfed a large part of the premises”, fuelled by the combustible materials inside. Although firefighters immediately got to work, the intense heat caused the metal structure of a section of the commercial building to collapse.
A fleet of vehicles, comprising multiple urban pumpers and a command centre fire engine equipped with an impressive 11,500-litre water tank, was dispatched to the scene. Together, they worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control and protect nearby buildings from the fire.
While the flames were being doused, officers from the Benidorm Local Police and the National Police evacuated residents from the Ronda building as a preventative measure.
Although ambulances were also sent to the scene, they weren’t needed in the end. Several surrounding buildings were also damaged.
