ARCHIVED - Spanish private health group opens Alicante hospitals to British patients on UK waiting lists
Spanish hospital group Vithas has signed an international collaboration agreement with Operations Abroad

British patients on lengthy hospital waiting lists in the UK will now be offered care in Alicante following an international agreement between Spanish hospital group Vithas and Operations Abroad.
The collaboration between the private hospital group and the international healthcare company that arranges medical treatment abroad will mean a wide range of medical care and services will be opened up to UK patients here in Spain, including surgical specialities and follow-ups.
Patients will be accompanied by personal health advisors before, during and after treatment, according to Vithas regional director, Victoria Verdú, who signed the agreement with Operations Abroad's MD, Ruth Taylor this week.
"The professionals at our hospitals are specially trained to adapt to the needs and culture of international patients and work in coordination with the different areas of the hospital", she said.
For its part, Operations Abroad "facilitates the administrative procedures and medical insurance with each national health system and offers estimates so that the patient living abroad has a prior economic estimate of what the cost of their treatment may entail".
The company specialises in the management of UK patients travelling abroad for medical treatment, and has a network of 80 hospitals in 40 countries around the world. More than 65,000 patients use the network's services.
Vithas, on the other hand, is made up of 19 hospitals and 31 medical and care centres in 13 Spanisah provinces.
The group also includes the Vithas Foundation, Vithas Red Diagnóstica, the PlazaSalud24 purchasing centre and a stake in Red Asistencial Juaneda, a hospital group in the Balearic Islands.
The national operator closed the 2021 financial year with revenues of €625 million, an increase of 19.3% compared to 2020, growth attributed to a "modernisation and repositioning strategy initiated between 2020 and 2021".
