Shark spotted on Orihuela Costa beach washes up dead in Cabo Roig
The blue shark which forced swimmers out of the sea yesterday has died of unknown causes
On Thursday afternoon, June 15, the carcass of the blue shark that was seen swimming in the waters off the Playa Aguamarina in Campoamor was found stranded in Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa.
The sighting had caused a stir amongst bathers and beachgoers not only at the Alicante beach itself but up and down the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida.
The appearance of blue sharks, known as ‘tintoreras’ in Spanish, are not uncommon in these waters, but when they are seen so close to shore it is normally because they are suffering from some problem, such as when they are sick or injured by longline fishing hooks.
According to the Shark Files Podcast, blue sharks “are only dangerous if provoked, and the real danger is for them from humans – they are the most persecuted of all shark species with 10-20 million killed each year worldwide.”
A necropsy will now be carried out on the blue shark that washed up in Cabo Roig this week to determine the cause of death.
