Police evacuate beach in Campoamor after shark sighting
The two-metre blue shark was spotted swimming off the Costa Blanca shore this morning
The sighting of a shark forced authorities to evacuate everyone from the water at the Playa Aguamarina beach in Campoamor at 10am this morning, Thursday June 15.
Lifeguards identified the animal as a blue shark approximately two metres long, which was swimming close to the Orihuela Costa shore just north of Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar.
Ruffled swimmers quickly fled the scene, including a diver who was right next to where the shark was.
Eyewitnesses say that one woman suffered an anxiety attack when she realised that the shark was swimming just a few metres from where she was.
The lifeguard service informed the local police, who made a sweep of the area but couldn’t spot the shark again.

The animal later washed up dead on a beach in Cabo Roig that afternoon, and experts believe it was sick or had been injured.
According to scientific studies, the increase in sea temperatures due to climate change is affecting all marine species, including large predators like sharks, and may alter their behavioural patterns, areas of distribution and migratory routes.
Just two weeks ago, another blue shark washed up half-dead at the Club Náutico de les Bassetes Diving School in Benissa.
