Sept 16-24 Torrevieja hosts international bowling tournament
Participants from 18 countries will flock to the Alicante city for the week-long competition
For the eleventh consecutive year, Ozone Bowling in the heart of the city will host the International Bowling Open Ciudad de Torrevieja between Saturday September 16 and Sunday September 24.
The event is growing in popularity with competitors from at home and abroad, and the 2023 event will coincide with another tournament for players over the age of 50, the III Torrevieja Senior Open, in the same venue.
In addition to competitors from Spain, participants have already signed up from 18 different countries, five more than in 2022: Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovakia, USA, Estonia, Finland, France, Netherlands, Italy, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Great Britain, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and Venezuela.
Among the latest Open Ciudad de Torrevieja champions are three Finns, a Spaniard, a Norwegian, a Venezuelan and a Belgian.
The qualifying phase of the Open Ciudad de Torrevieja ends on Saturday September 23. The format is six matches played American style, i.e. alternating on two courts. Participants can take part without limits to improve their result and players will receive an additional handicap of 8 pins per match.
The final phase between the top 32 bowlers will take place throughout the day on Sunday September 24, culminating in a one-game match between the eight players with the highest scores. The participant with the highest overall score will receive a cheque for 3,000 euros and a trophy. This year, the total prize money will amount to 13,800 euros.
In addition to the open category, for players with an average of 190 or more, the tournament also has two lower categories: Category B (average between 189.99 and 170) and Category C (average below 170). The final of the simultaneous but separate Senior Open will be played on the morning of Friday September 22.
Throughout the tournament, entry into the Ozone to watch the competitions will be absolutely free and the last two qualifying days, Friday and Saturday, as well as all the finals, will be streamed live on YouTube.
