ARCHIVED - Rush of tourists prompts creation of hundreds of parking spaces at popular Alicante beach
A temporary car park is being installed close to Alicante's San Juan beach
The onset of summer has seen a surge of visitors to Alicante's most popular beach in San Juan, bringing with it motor mayhem as thousands scramble to find a parking space.
So Alicante City Council has come up with a seasonal solution and has begun creating 500 new provisional parking spaces between Avenida de las Naciones and Calle Músico Vicente Spiteri.
On one plot of municipal land with a surface area of 10,000m2, 383 spaces will be made available to the public within the next two weeks for the summer season.

In addition, capacity at a car park next to Plaza de la Coruña will be permanently doubled offering parking for more than 200 vehicles following repeated requests from the Asociación de Vecinos Juntos Avanzamos (Neighborhood Association Together We Advance Playa de San Juan).
Councillor for Traffic, José Ramón González, added: "In this particular area there is a high demand for parking, especially in summer, so the modifications will mean a significant improvement of parking in the sector doubling the available space.
"Work has already begun levelling one of the plots, applying gravel and compacting it to level the ground and the car park will be operational within a fortnight."
As part of the project, the Traffic Department will also carry out the modifications which will mean the loss of a lane of traffic, and implement traffic calming measures in the area to increase pedestrian safety and improve mobility.
