ARCHIVED - Renfe plans to reinstate suspended Madrid-Alicante ticket sales this week
Passengers were unable to buy AVE tickets from June 30 sparking outrage amongst the Costa Blanca tourism sector
Earlier this week, both travellers and the Costa Blanca's tourism sector were up in arms over Renfe's suspension of Madrid-Alicante AVE train ticket sales from June 30 – right on the verge of the summer season.
The rail company denied that sales had been suspended and said that it was waiting for new traffic patterns, but the reality is that Madrid passengers trying to book seats from the end of the month are still unable to do so, throwing their holiday plans into disarray with many having already booked hotels or apartments at resorts in Alicante province.
The move was blasted as "unacceptable" by the Costa Blanca's hotel employers' association Hosbec and Alicante City Council and the government was urged to "rectify the situation".
Now Renfe has announced that it is "committed" to reinstating Madrid-Alicante ticket sales, once authorised by the State Railway Safety Agency (AESF). Although the "exact date is unknown" the Minister for Mobility, Rebeca Torró, has assured that "this problem will be fixed this week".
President of the Valencia Government, Ximo Puig, has also put pressure on the rail company and Madrid government to sort out the ticket issue, warning "we are not going to allow it".
"What we will not allow in any case is that decisions are made without taking into account the social and economic impact that they have. We have made it clear to Renfe that this is a key line and one of the most important AVE in Spain, not just the Valencian community," he said.
