ARCHIVED - Record number of cases in a single day for Alicante: Valencia Covid update January 19
Over the last 24 hours, there were 8,286 new infections and 15 deaths in Alicante province
There appears to be no slowdown in the continued rise in daily infections in the Valencia region, driven by the Omicron variant, and Alicante province in particular is experiencing a worrying surge, recording its highest number of infections in a 24-hour period since the start of the pandemic.
Valencia's regional Ministry of Health has confirmed 22,016 new cases since the last update on Tuesday, and 8,286 of these have been reported in Alicante province, as have more than half of the 23 deaths (15). Unsurprisingly, the province's 14-day cumulative incidence rate has also reached unprecedented levels and now stands at 3,076 cases per 100,000 people.
Coronavirus cases
The Regional Ministry of Health has reported 22,016 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, up from 13,196 on Tuesday January 18, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 886,653.
By province: 3,909 have been recorded in Castellón (110,066 in total), 8,286 in Alicante (322,298) and 9,821 in Valencia (454,287).
There are still two unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 162,034 active cases, which represent 18.04% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,720 people admitted to hospital with Covid (19 more than on Tuesday), 198 of them in ICU (seven less): 235 in the province of Castellón, 26 in ICU; 590 in the province of Alicante, 66 of them in ICU; and 895 in the province of Valencia, 106 in ICU.
19,947 patients have overcome the virus since the last update, meaning 727,717 people have recovered from the disease since the start of the pandemic.
By provinces, the discharges are distributed as follows: 81,734 in Castellón; 259,461 in Alicante; and 386,466 in Valencia. The total of unassigned registrations remains at 56.
Fatalities
A further 23 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Tuesday's update, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,343: 946 in the province of Castellón, 3,203 in Alicante and 4,194 in Valencia.
The deceased, who died within the last seven days, are 16 women, aged between 45 and 94, and seven men between 48 and 92-years-old.
Vaccination data
Once again, there has been no update on vaccinations, but as of Friday January 14, 4,265,413 people had been double-jabbed or had received the Janssen single dose, and a total of 10,042,110 doses of vaccine had been administered since the beginning of the pandemic.
