Quenched Orihuela Costa fire spontaneously reignites
Around 20 people had to be evacuated in Las Ramblas as the flames threatened their homes

Stunned Orihuela Costa locals and tourists watched on in horror last Friday as a wildfire which threatened to engulf two of the area’s most prestigious golf courses spontaneously reignited, just hours after being quenched by firefighters.
The blaze, located in an area of heavy vegetation between the Las Ramblas and Campoamor golf clubs, was brought under control for the first time in the early hours of June 21. However, the Provincial Fire Consortium soon had to dust off its gear and head back to the area, as the flames had reappeared.
It was finally put out at around 4pm that same afternoon, when firefighter Miguel Montero officially reported that the flames were “controlled and cold”.
According to Orihuela Emergency Councillor, Víctor Valverde, the flames were “high and alarming at times” and the firefighting aircraft, which had been collecting water from the nearby canal, stayed on hand until just before 5.30pm to be safe.
Several members of the fire brigade also continued to work into the evening to completely douse any hot spots to prevent the fire from sparking up again.
While the original blaze spread from Las Ramblas to the Campoamor course up a steep slope, the strong winds blew the second fire in the opposite direction, causing a good deal of panic in the local urbanisations as the flames licked towards several homes on Calle Rambla de Oleza.
Around 20 residents were evacuated, but thankfully the golf course itself, which activated its sprinklers to the max, acted as an artificial firewall against the fire, which has remained at the edge of the grass. There was also concern about a gas pipeline nearby.
