Pregnant horse pulled to safety after dramatic Alicante rescue
The mare tumbled into a ditch after the ground gave way beneath her in Xixona, Alicante
In a dramatic and heart-warming rescue operation, members of the Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade successfully saved a pregnant mare that fell into a ditch in Piedra Negra, Xixona.
The incident, which unfolded on a tense evening last week, showcased the bravery and expertise of the firefighters involved.
The emergency call came in shortly before 6.30pm, alerting the fire brigade to a distressed animal in need. The situation was immediately recognised as critical and a rapid response was initiated.
A command unit (UMJ), a heavy rural fire engine (BRP), a crane and a rescue van (FSV) were dispatched to the scene. The team consisted of a sergeant, a corporal and four dedicated firefighters from the San Vicente fire station. The local police of Gijón also lent their support, ensuring a coordinated effort.
But firefighters faced a challenging scenario as the pregnant horse had fallen deep into a deep ditch after the ground beneath her gave way. The presence of the unborn foal added an extra layer of urgency to the rescue, as the team knew they had to act with extreme caution.
Emergency workers carefully widened the hole so that the mare could be pulled through. Once she was lifted to safety at 11.13pm, the mare was checked over by a vet and returned to her relieved owner.
