German fugitive arrested at Alicante checkpoint
The wanted man was subject to two arrest warrants when he was picked up in Novelda
The Guardia Civil has arrested a 45-year-old man in Novelda, an inland town around 15km from Elche, after discovering he was wanted under two European Arrest Warrants issued by Germany for offences relating to disturbing public order.
The arrest came about during a routine vehicle and pedestrian checkpoint set up as part of the force's ongoing crime prevention work. Officers grew suspicious of a van with German number plates passing through and decided to stop it to check the driver's identification.
Once they'd run his documents through police databases, officers found the two outstanding European Arrest Warrants against him, according to a statement issued by the Guardia Civil this Tuesday. The van itself turned out to be wanted by German authorities too, and it was seized on the spot.
The man was handed over to the Instruction Section of the Central Court of First Instance, which ordered his release under precautionary measures. These include the withdrawal of his passport and a requirement to appear periodically before the Judicial Authority.
