ARCHIVED - Police dog sniffs out cache of drugs off Torrevieja coast
22 packages of hashish discovered at Levante breakwater in the Vega Baja, Alicante province.
A cache of drugs has been located in the rocky area of the breakwater at Paseo del Dique de Levante, in Torrevieja, thanks in part to the efforts of the Operational Reinforcement Group's (GRO) canine unit.
On Saturday afternoon, the crew of a Local Police surveillance patrol spotted a "suspicious package" amongst the rocks in a section of the 1.6km stretch of dam, and alerted the GRO, which sent a sniffer dog and its handler to the scene.
The canine's immediate reactions confirmed there were drugs inside the package, specifically 22 large 'bricks' of hashish.
It's not clear where the hashish came from, and the Guardia Civil has been notified.
Earlier this month, police arrested a gang that allegedly used children to commit crimes in Torrevieja, mainly home break-ins, "paying" them with drugs.
