ARCHIVED - Orihuela reinstates Blue Zone parking after five-month suspension
The Parking Management and Regulation Service (ORA) has been reactivated across the Vega Baja town in Alicante province

Orihuela's Blue Zone short stay parking system has been reinstated this week following a five-month suspension.
The municipal company ILDO will manage the Parking Management and Regulation Service (ORA) for the next 12 months, and although the system is pretty much the same as before in that people can pay via a mobile app, card and cash at parking meters, there will be improvements and modifications in the coming months including a bonus system.
Blue Zone parking was temporarily suspended on January 14 when the previous contract with Setex Aparki came to an end. According to the Town Hall, "there wasn't enough time to put out a new tender", but pressure mounted from the commerce and hospitality sector to have the service reinstated "to encourage rotational parking, attract visitors and residents from outer Orihuela districts and boost local trade".
In addition, ILDO will be responsible for the assembly, dismantling and control of security measures at markets in Orihuela for the next two years.
"Another of the tasks entrusted to them is to inform market police of any infringements, incidents or emergency situations that may arise - a job that has been shown, when carried out during the pandemic, to reduce the number of petty thefts and make the markets safer".
And as a novelty this year, three "rest points for the elderly and pregnant women, amongst other people" have been set up in designated tents with a table and chairs".
