ARCHIVED - Blue Zone parking will be reinstated in Orihuela from June 27
The 'visitors' parking service in the Vega Baja town, Aliante province, was suspended in January

Orihuela's Blue Zone short stay parking system will be reinstated from Monday June 27 after it was suspended on January 14 when the previous contract with Setex Aparki came to an end and eight members of staff were put on ERTE.
The parking management and regulation service (ORA) will return under the same conditions, and people will be able to pay via a mobile app, card and cash at the parking meters.
Over the next two weeks, all of the meters will reviewed after being "sealed for many months".
"During this time there has been heavy rain and they need to be brought up to speed. We would have liked that once the subrogation of the staff had been approved the service could have been resumed sooner with the municipal company ILDO, but there are things that need to be finalised," explained Orihuela Mayor, Carolina Gracia.
Although the Blue Zones will operate in the same way as before, there will be modifications in the coming months, such as a bonus system, but "these issues have to be taken to a plenary session and we didn't want to delay the implementation of the blue zone any longer, so the changes will be made later," added the mayor.
ILDO will manage the parking service for at least a year in which time the tender will be put out to a private company.
The announcement of the return of the Blue Zones has been welcomed by Pablo Ferrer, vice-president of the Association of Traders of the Municipality of Orihuela (ACMO), who pointed out "the enormous advantages of being able to park for commerce and the hotel and catering trade".
ACMO had repeatedly called for the return of the blue zone to encourage rotational parking and attract visitors and residents from outer Orihuela districts and "allow them to park and shop with ease".
