ARCHIVED - Orihuela steps up anti-mosquito campaign following demands from plagued residents
The fumigation campaign is being reinforced in El Palmeral, Los Huertos and Orihuela Costa

Residents living in a number of Orihuela districts have been plagued by swarms of mosqiutos over the last few weeks as populations spiral out of control following heavy rain and high temperatures.
And last week they joined forces to put pressure on Orihuela Council to carry out extensive fumigation to control the infestations. In response, the local authority has pledged to reinforce its anti-mosquito campaign in El Palmeral, Los Huertos and Orihuela Costa.
According to the Councillor for the Environment, Patricia Menárguez, "due to the high temperatures and stagnant water from the rains, the number of mosquitoes has increased, so the company awarded the pest control contract has increased and intensified the treatment in areas of stagnant water to avoid the causes of the nuisance caused by mosquito bites."
Mosquito and other pest control is carried out every fortnight throughout the year, but fumigation in these particular areas will now be done on a weekly basis.
Joaquín Bernabeu, manager of CTL, the company awarded the pest control contract in Orihuela, explained that "boats are being used along the Segura riverbed as well as spray cannons for areas such as El Palmeral and where there is a lot of vegetation".
These cannons have a range of 30 metres parallel to the ground and a vertical range of 25 metres making them "very effective for riverbeds, reeds and irrigation ditches".
The firm currently has teams working three days a week in Orihuela to tackle the infestations and the public is encouraged to report any major outbreaks to the Department of the Environment.
