ARCHIVED - Orihuela suspends terrace tax until July
The aim is to aid the recovery of the Vega Baja town's hospitality sector, which has been hit hard by the pandemic
Orihuela Town Council is offering a helping hand to bars, restaurants and cafes by covering the cost of placing tables and chairs on terraces and public roads until the end of June 2022.
The terrace tax suspension will be in force retrospectively from January 1 until June 30 2022.
"The modification of the ordinance relating to rates for the occupation of public roads with tables and chairs for profit will be extended to alleviate the economic damage caused as a result of the pandemic," explained Orihuela Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, who promised "to show our full support for the hospitality sector and contribute to its recovery, as it has been severely affected during the health crisis and the restrictions established since March 2020."
The local authority added in a statement that it hopes "it will not be necessary to make this type of modification to the ordinance again", as that would "be a sign that everything is back to normal, which is what we all want".
