ARCHIVED - Orihuela opens its beaches to surfers: Cala Cerrada is ideal for surfers
Surfers are being encouraged to visit Cala Cerrada beach on Orihuela's coastline in the Vega Baja del Segura of Alicante province.
Beach regulations have been modified to encourage surfing in the municipality, in particular at Cala Cerrada beach in La Zenia.
The waters off the beautiful coastline apparently boast "ideal conditions and characteristics to enjoy surfing", and for years lovers of the sport have been calling for a legal framework to support it.
Prior to the pandemic, interest in surfing at the beach increased year after year, so now, surfing will be promoted by the local authorities in high season and at any time when the red flag is flying.
"These are the times when bathing is prohibited but sea conditions are optimal for the practice of this sport," explained the council.
The aim is to open up the coastline to as many users as possible, and earlier this month, Orihuela opened its first beach for dogs.
