ARCHIVED - Orihuela museum struck by second fire in four months
A fire broke out at the Museo de Semana Santa de Orihuela in Alicante province's Vega Baja comarca in the early hours of Monday morning.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit at around 3am this morning, Monday, May 24, igniting curtains and causing smoke damage to the walls and ceilings.
Local Police managed to extinguish the flames and bring the fire under control before firefighters arrived on the scene, and fortunately nobody was injured.
However, a major clean up operation is required after smoke filled the whole building.
This is a second blow for Orihuela's Easter museum, which was damaged in a similar fire in January.
The religious museum was declared of International Tourist Interest in 2010 and attracts thousands of visitors to the town for its impressive annual processions during the Easter period.
