Major road expansion on A-7 near Alicante
An extra lane will be added in both directions between Orihuela and Crevillente
Spain's Ministry of Transport plans to spend nearly 90 million euros (including VAT) to upgrade a stretch of the Mediterranean Highway (A-7) connecting Crevillente with the Orihuela/Benferri link near Alicante.
This expansion should greatly help traffic flow and improve road safety by adding a third lane on either side of the highway for approximately 17 kilometres between kilometres 528 and 545.
Additionally, improvements will extend to the entrance ramp of Orihuela on the CV-870, continuing previous works completed between Elche and Crevillente in 2008. Upgrades will cover several sections, namely Crevillente-Catral, Albatera-San Isidro, Granja de Rocamora-Cox, N-340 Redován and Orihuela-Benferri, transitioning them into diamond-shaped connections equipped with roundabouts.
The extended area will feature wider lanes measuring 3.5 metres, 2.5-metre right shoulders, and 1.6-metre outer shoulders. The platforms of 15 flyovers will also be widened and the clearance of 13 overhead crossings will be adjusted.
Furthermore, the central reservation will incorporate barriers preventing crossover accidents, and drainage channels will be installed between paired existing bridges on both ends of the route.
Finally, noise reduction measures will be implemented for residential homes close to the motorway.
The plans will soon be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and work on the road is expected to commence shortly afterwards.
