Orihuela Costa streets get long overdue clear-up
Council workers have removed the rubbish that was dumped on the streets ages ago
Orihuela City Council has begun the removal of the illegally flytipped waste that has for so long lain on the public roads of Orihuela Costa. Even though it’s not technically in their remit, they have become so fed up with the construction waste clogging up the streets that they’ve taken it into their own hands and have managed to fill up no fewer than five skips’ worth of rubbish.
The Councillor for Waste and Road Cleaning, Rocio Ortuño, and Councillor for the Environment, Noelia Grao, have explained the work is being carried out in the coastal area where debris accumulates mainly in the various urbanisations, right next to the rubbish containers.
“The council removes solid urban waste and household goods, but it so happens that, for a long time, in certain areas all kinds of debris from small construction works and renovations have accumulated in a totally irresponsible way next to the rubbish containers, causing dirt and neglect,” pointed out the councillors.
“Despite not being one of our ordinary functions,” they continued, “we have proceeded to hire the necessary support services for their removal and transfer to the treatment plant.”
The streets where most of the waste was accumulated were on Calle Lapislázuli, Avenida de España, Calle Colón, Calle San Antonio, Calle Rubí, Gerardo Diego, Parquin de las Ramblas, Antonio Tapies, Osa Mayor, Sagitario, Acuario, Arcoíris, Victoria, Horizonte, Calle Pomelo, Calle Otelo, Calle De Palos, Calle Almansa, República Dominicana, Calle Venezuela and Ramblas de Oleza.
Council workers have made a desperate plea to Orihuela Costa residents to please not litter outside the bins and to take any large, bulky waste to the Ecoparque rubbish tip.
