ARCHIVED - One dead as truck overturns on A-31 Petrer motorway
The accident in the Vinalopó Mitjà area of Alicante province has caused 5-kilometre tailbacks
An early morning accident on the A-31 motorway in the Alicante municipality of Petrer has claimed the life of another motorist.
A truck travelling in the direction of Madrid overturned at kilometre 207.1 at around 4.30am on Wednesday December 7 and the earliest reports to the emergency services from other drivers were of a man lying in the middle of the road. Paramedics rushed to the scene but were sadly only able to confirm the death of the motorist.
It is as yet unclear whether the victim was travelling in the lorry or another vehicle.
Given the seriousness of the accident, the road has been completely blocked off, resulting in 5-kilometre tailbacks that have now reached as far as the neighbouring town of Sax.
To alleviate the traffic jam, the Guardia Civil is diverting traffic from the A-31 in the Madrid-Alicante direction through the exit of the old Elda Red Cross post, in the Salinetas industrial estate, towards the roundabout.
This stretch of motorway is a notorious black spot and the latest fatality is added to the almost 2,000 lives lost on Spanish roads so far this year. According to a recent study, part of the A-77 in Alicante is one of the most dangerous sections of motorway in all of Spain, specifically kilometre zero as it enters the city.
