Major new housing project in Orihuela Costa enters final stages
The controversial Playa Flamenca development is set to transform the last undeveloped stretch of Orihuela Costa
A huge new housing development in Playa Flamenca is edging closer to reality as work at the long-disputed Cala Mosca site on Orihuela Costa enters its final stages.
The project, officially called Las Vistas, covers what was previously the last undeveloped kilometre of Orihuela Costa’s coastline and will eventually include more than 2,000 homes.
Developers have now submitted plans for the first residential phase, which includes 188 properties, with building permission expected very soon after receiving a favourable report from Alicante’s College of Architects.
Much of the main infrastructure is already completed or nearing completion, including water supply systems, drainage networks, electricity installations, pumping stations and public lighting.
The scheme is being developed by the Gomendio group, a construction company with decades of experience in the Costa Blanca area and behind several large developments in Orihuela Costa and neighbouring Torrevieja.
According to the developers, the project has been designed to combine residential construction with green areas and environmental protection. They say homes will mainly be built closer to the N-332 road, leaving the land nearest the coast more open.
Of the site’s 455,000m² total area, more than 81,000m² will remain protected land, while around 38,000m² has been designated as green space connecting Punta Prima and La Zenia.
Plans also include a 1.3km coastal walking and cycling route, landscaped gardens, lakes, dog parks, sports areas and more than 900 newly planted trees, including hundreds of palm trees.
Developers say environmental restoration work has already begun, including the planting of more than 4,000 native Mediterranean plants aimed at protecting local species and restoring parts of the natural habitat.
The project has been highly controversial for years though, with local residents and environmental campaigners fiercely opposing construction on the Cala Mosca site.
Campaign group Salvemos Cala Mosca previously organised protests and filed complaints in attempts to stop the development going ahead altogether.
Despite the opposition, work has continued moving forward and the first homes now appear likely to begin construction in the near future.
