Final approval given to huge new housing development in Orihuela Costa
More than 2,000 homes will be built in Cala Mosca, Playa Flamenca
Residents close to the only undeveloped strip of land in Playa Flamenca have seen the last of their hopes dashed this week after the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) upheld its November 14 ruling and endorsed the new building project planned at Cala Mosca.
The developers now believe they will be able to apply for the first building licences and plans before the summer.
Numerous objections have been raised in the past few months against the Orihuela Costa development, which will consist of around 2,200 homes. Neighbourhood groups insist that the N-332 is hardly equipped to handle the volume of traffic it currently has to deal with, and they worry that the infrastructure will collapse entirely with thousands of new homeowners in the area.
Moreover, the sewage treatment plant in the area was originally designed to serve a significantly smaller population than the current one. As a result, it often reaches capacity during the summer months, leading to frequent overflows and the subsequent closure of local beaches.
However, the court has now ruled that the proposed development “does not affect the road in any way” since the existing roundabout on the frontline of Cala Mosca should ensure that traffic continues to move freely.
The new urbanisation was stalled back in 2007 when environmental concerns were raised, but the developer has since agreed to parcel off 60,000 square metres of the 456,009-square-metre plot as a nature reserve for protected flora and fauna.
According to the developer, the project is progressing according to plan, and the expectation is that the entire project will be completed by the end of this year, specifically in December 2024.
