ARCHIVED - No sting in the tail for firemen as they remove beehive from Calpe balcony
Alicante firemen were asked to remove the hive as it was terrifying residents in the Marina Alta
Bees are precious pollinators and their numbers are falling throughout Spain due to the endless agricultural spraying, pollution and loss of natural habitat.
But they’re also tenacious survivors and take every opportunity possible to build a hive, although increasingly this brings them into direct conflict with ourselves.

Bees only sting once in their lives and then they die, so they’re not given to attacking without justification, unlike the feistier wasps which can be such a nuisance in the summer, but they do have a habit of deciding to build a hive in the most unfortunate locations, as was the case with this hive in Calpe.
The bees only require a tiny crack through which they can enter into a perfect cavity space, and in this case they somehow found a way in through the balcony drain and located an appropriate cavity for a hive behind the plasterboard wall.
