ARCHIVED - New infections soar to 3000 in Valencia region: Covid Update July 21
3,015 cases in 24 hours with 789 in Alicante province.
The fifth wave of the Covid pandemic continues to pick up pace in the Valencia region with a sharp rise in new infections confirmed over the last 24 hours which has seen the 14-day cumulative rate soar to 512 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - up from 496 on Tuesday.
The region remains below the national average, which has shot up 23 points since yesterday to 645, and is currently faring better than Catalonia with the highest rate in the country at 1,240, and Navarra (926), but is lagging behind Andalusia (433) and Murcia (322), though these regions - as is the trend across Spain - have also seen figures climb.
The Valencian government has today asked the region's Supreme Court of Justice to extend the night curfew - currently in place in 32 towns - to a further 45 municipalities as infections continue to soar.
San Vicente del Raspeig is the only municipality in Alicante where a 1am to 6am curfew and limitations on social and family gatherings are currnetly in place, but the regional government is proposing the same measures be imposed in a further 17 of the province's towns, including Benidorm, Denia and Calpe.
The 3,015 new infections confirmed today by the Ministry of Health - almost 1,000 more than the 2,112 reported on Tuesday - bring the total number of positives since the start of the pandemic to 439,821. By province: 789 new infections in Alicante (157,839 in total); 1,834 in Valencia (236,586 in total); and 392 in Castellón (45,394 in total).
Hospitals: There are currently 525 Covid patients being treated in Valencian hospitals (up from 517 on Tuesday), of which 72 are in ICU (down from 79): 81 in Alicante province, 11 of them in ICU; 387 in Valencia, 57 of them in ICU; and 57 in Castellón, four in ICU
Recoveries: 1,830 people have recovered in the last 24 hours (there were 1,581 on Tuesday), meaning 417,571 people have been given the all-clear since the start of the pandemic: 152,303 in Alicante province; 221,904 in Valencia; and 43,305 in Castellón.
Fatalities: There have been two reported deaths in the last seven days, meaning the total remains at 7,473: 2,850 in Alicante; 3,814 in Valencia; and 809 in Castellón.
Active cases: There are currently 26,239 active cases, which represents 5.81 per cent of the total positives.
Vaccinations: A total of 3,034,293 people (67.6 per cent of the region's population) have now received at least one dose and 2,478,635 are fully immunised. By provinces: 892,244 in Alicante; 1,294,762 in Valencia; and 291,629 in Castellón.
