ARCHIVED - New infections plunge a third in a week: Valencia Covid update August 17
All coronvirus indicators continue to slide in Alicante province and the rest of the region

After weeks of see-sawing, all important Covid indicators appear to be stabilising and continue on a downward trajectory indicating the virus is easing its grip on the region.
Daily cases have fallen by 33.8% in a week, although the over 60s remains the age group with the highest incidence, and there are almost 100 fewer seriously ill Covid patients on hospital wards in the Valencian Community.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has confirmed 1,761 new coronavirus cases since the last update, almost 1,000 less than the 2,664 infections reported a week ago.
By provinces: 311 in Castellón (189,102 in total), 522 in Alicante (523,647 in total) and 928 in Valencia (825,717 in total).
Of these new cases, 932 are people over 60 years of age (down from 1,400 a week ago): Of the new cases in over 60s, 170 from Castellón, 296 from Alicante and 466 from Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 768 Covid patients in hospitals across the Valencia region, a significant drop on the 861 patients on wards on Tuesday August 10, 45 of them in the ICU (10 more): 125 in the province of Castellón, 4 in the ICU; 243 in the province of Alicante, 11 of them in the ICU, and 400 in the province of Valencia, 30 in the ICU.
Fatalities
Thirteen deaths have been reported since the last update, all of which occurred within the last seven days.
The deceased are 7 men aged between 78 and 94-years-old and 6 women aged between 59 and 96-years-old. This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 9,901: 1,171 in the province of Castellón, 3,775 in Alicante and 4,955 in Valencia.
