ARCHIVED - New cases fall as deaths rise in Valencia region: Covid Update August 17
765 new cases and 18 deaths in the Valencia region's three provinces, including Alicante
The Valencia region now has the third lowest incidence rate in Spain, having fallen to 326.44, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, but while new daily cases have fallen to 765 - significantly less than the 2,000 mark seen last week - there have been 18 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours (nine were reported on Monday).
The region remains below the national average 14-day cumulative incidence rate, which now stands at 398.94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and is faring better than Andalucia (453.37) and the Region of Murcia (377.44), but lagging behind Asturias (211.04) and Canarias (312.55).
A breakdown of the latest health data for the Valencia region shows:
New cases: Of the 765 new cases (down from 1,439 cases reported on Friday and 2,879 on Monday, August 16), 375 were in the province of Alicante, 278 were in the province of Valencia and 112 in Castellón.
Hospitalisations: Valencia’s hospitals currently have 573 Covid patients, of whom 95 are in intensive care: 191 in the province of Alicante (28 in ICU); 300 in the province of Valencia (52 in ICU); and 82 in the province of Castellón (15 in ICU). At the start of the week there were 668 people in hospital with coronavirus.
Discharges: 2,154 patients have been given the all-clear in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have recovered since the start of the pandemic in the region to 477,223. By province: 170,356 in Alicante; 257,217 in Valencia; and 49,592 in Castellón.
Fatalities: According to the latest update, there have been 18 Covid-related deaths in the last seven days, bringing the total number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 7,593. By province: 2,888 in Alicante; 3,885 in Valencia; and 820 in Castellón.
Vaccines: A total of 3,706,897 people have now had at least one Covid jab and 3,096,117 people are fully immunised: 1,107,290 in Alicante; 1,622,964 in Valencia; and 365,863 in Castellón.
Active cases: There are currently 16,616 active cases in the region (down from 18,024 on Monday); which represents 3.31 per cent of the total positives.
Although the number of new daily Covid cases and the region's incidence rate is now moving in the right direction, the regional government has extended capacity restrictions and nightly curfews in 68 municipality's until September 6 in a bid to prevent a further rebound.
