N-332 road between Altea and Calpe to close for a week
Major road works on the Mascarat tunnels will shut off traffic between May 14 and 21
Extensive safety and improvement works planned for the Mascarat tunnels on Alicante’s N-332 dual carriageway will force the complete closure of the road between Calpe and Altea from Sunday May 14 until Sunday May 21. So far, the ongoing project has only required the closure of one lane of traffic, but the next phase involves the entire highway between kilometre points 164+700 and 165+500.
Drivers who normally use this stretch of road will have to travel on the AP-7 for a week instead, between the Altea-Calpe junction (exit 64) and the Benissa-Teulada-Gata de Gorgos junction (exit 63). To keep disruption to motorists at a minimum, both the cut to the N-332 and the motorway alternative will be clearly signposted.
Residents of Calpe travelling to Maryvilla and the Barranc Salat area will still be able to use the dual carriageway. However, if they are driving towards Altea, they should travel in the opposite direction and enter the motorway at the Benissa-Teulada-Gata de Gorgos exit.
With a budget of 1.2 million euros financed by Next Generation Funds, the road works on the two Mascarat tunnels are part of a broader project that aims to modernise and improve several tunnels scattered along the N-332 in the province of Alicante. El Altet and El Campello will also be tackled in due course.
In order to reach European standards, the Ministry of Transport explained, the financing will focus on improving emergency exits, signage, beaconing, lighting, ventilation, electrical installation, fire protection, drainage, communication and traffic management.
