ARCHIVED - Murcia City to switch off Christmas lights at midnight to save energy
The lights in Murcia will remain on until 2am on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve
Murcia City Council has decided to turn off the Christmas lights at midnight this year with the exception of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when they will remain on until 2am. No date has yet been set for the official switching on of the decorations, but the authorities hope that this measure will be enough to drastically reduce energy costs.
On the other hand, nearby Cartagena has joined the Spanish capital and several other municipalities in refusing to alter their lighting plan, “since there is no regulation in this regard”.
Indeed, even though the Spanish government has issued a long list of energy-saving recommendations for homes and businesses this autumn-winter season, the comprehensive document doesn’t once mention Christmas lights, leaving it up to each regional government to set an example to citizens in the way they see fit.
Seville has come out with the most restrictions, delaying the switching on by a week this year and insisting that the lights be turned off by 10pm most nights. The Valencian Community has opted against any limitations, but it has already managed to make significant savings by switching to highly-efficient LED lights and striking a multi-year deal with an installation company.
Sticking to its guns, Madrid has responded to the appeals of business owners to maintain the usual schedule, and the government will absorb any extra cost. Each hour of lighting will cost 180 euros, a “perfectly affordable” price, according to the administration, given that the Christmas decorations bring more people out on the streets and encourage them to spend money.
For its part, Malaga has decided to switch on the lights on November 26 as usual but they will be turned off two hours earlier each night, a “gesture” that serves to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation and which should save around 7,000 euros in electricity costs.
