ARCHIVED - Mountain of tyres amongst 2,000 kilos of waste cleared from Calpe seabed
Around 180 fishermen, divers and volunteers spent a day cleaning the coastline and seabed in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
Shocking images of a mountain of tyres and huge bins full of debris and waste show the full extent of the problem of marine litter following a seabed clean-up day in Calpe on Saturday November 20.
More than 2,000 kilos of waste was recovered from the sea and the coastline near the town port during the environmental initiative organised by Calpe Fishermen's Guild and the Institute for Research in Environment and Marine Science (IMEDMAR), in partnership with the local council, Rotary Club Ifach-Calpe, the Calpe Royal Yacht Club, Red Cross, Aeronáutica and various environmental associations.
Around 120 volunteers and fishermen on land and more than 40 divers and paddle boarders from clubs from across the Valencian region took part, recovering a "huge amount" of glass bottles, car and tractor wheels, half a dozen car batteries, nets, boats and plastics, all of which was separated and deposited in different containers.
In addition to the cleaning of the harbour seabed, waste was also collected from Cantal Roig beach, where a large quantity of cigarette butts and plastics were cleared, as well as fishing lines.
The day was rounded off with talks about the impact of marine litter and informative videos at the IMEDMAR facilities followed by a creative recycling workshop before everyone who took part enjoyed a traditional fish dish 'fideuá' prepared by members of Calpe Fishermen's Guild.
"The overall assessment is very positive because, at the end of the day, this initiative has brought together people from nautical and diving companies, fishermen, volunteers, university students and sports people, all with the same goal: to protect the environment and raise awareness," said IMEDMAR director, José Rafael García.
