ARCHIVED - Mother and son arrested after British pensioner is shot dead at her Elche home
Police believe the octogenarin was killed during a robbery at her villa in the Alicante town

A 46-year-old woman and her 16-year-old son have been arrested after an 80-year-old British woman was shot dead at her home in Elche on Wednesday May 4.
Investigators from Alicante and Madrid are still trying to clarify the motive for the horrific crime, but have not ruled out that it was an intended robbery. The arrested mother, known to the victim, allegedly fired three shots with a 22mm calibre pistol, that has since been recovered, fatally wounding Mónica W. in her home on the Torre Azul urbanisation in the Elche district of Maitino.
The suspect's teenage son was reportedly present at the scene, and "helped" his mother before they both fled. Both were reportedly seen in the area by a plumber the victim, a widow who lived alone, had called to carry out a repair. After discovering a "trail of blood", the workman alerted police.
As of Friday morning, May 6, Violent Crime police teams from Elche and Alicante, together with the General Commissariat of Scientific Police from Madrid continue to carry out in-depth technical ocular inspections at the murder scene gathering evidence and it is expected that statements will be taken from the two arrestees later in the day.
As the son is a minor, he has been placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office, whilst the mother is currently being held in custody at Alicante Provincial Police Station.
In recent months, police have reinforced security controls in this particular area, as well as in Torrellano and Valverde, following a number of reports of thefts.
