ARCHIVED - More than 29,000 new infections over the weekend: Valencia Covid update January 10
The cumulative incidence rate in Alicante province has hit an all time high with 1,763 cases per 100,000 people
The sixth wave of the pandemic continues to grip the Valencia region which has reached yet another record registering 29,347 Covid cases over the weekend.
The figure surpasses a previous record set just days ago when 28,846 were reported, and the spike has seen the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Alicante province skyrocket to an all time high during the entire pandemic, reaching 1,763 cases per 100,000 people.
Alcoy health department continues its dubious honour of being in the lead with a rate above 2,800, after adding more than 1,200 infections since the end of last week, while Torrevieja remains the only one with an rate below 1,000.
In an attempt to stem the surge in infections, and particularly in light of the fact that students are returning to school after the Christmas holiday, the Ministry of Health has implemented a series of anti-Covid measures, whilst others will remain in place until December 31.
And to try to gauge the true extent of positives cases in the Valencia region, Covid test results will be notified by text to shorten the response times.
Coronavirus cases
The Valencian Community reported 29,347 new Covid infections on Monday January 10, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 742,333.
By province, 3,632 have been recorded in Castellón (84,128 in total); 11,014 in Alicante (268,146); and 14,701 in Valencia (390,058), according to data provided by the regional department of health.
The number of unassigned cases stands at one.
According to the data, there are currently 124,239 active cases, which represents 16.48% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,374 people admitted to hospital with Covid (up from 1,184 on Friday January 7), 201 of them in ICU (up from 190): 202 in the province of Castellón, 27 in the ICU; 458 in the province of Alicante, 70 of them in the ICU; and 714 in the province of Valencia, 104 in ICU.
12,066 patients have been discharged from hospital and some 621,316 people have overcome the disease since the start of the pandemic.
By provinces, the discharges are distributed as follows: 69,550 in Castellón, 223,716 in Alicante and 327,994 in Valencia. The total of unassigned registrations remains at 56.
Fatalities
A further 22 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Friday January 7, bringing the overall death toll to 8,219: 928 in the province of Castellón, 3,161 in Alicante and 4,130 in Valencia.
The deceased are 12 women, aged between 37 and 93, and 10 men between the ages of 50 and 83-years-old.
Vaccination data
There has been no update with regards to vaccinations, but as of last Friday, 4,265,296 people had been fully immunised against Covid in the Valencian Community, and a total of 9,784,304 coronavirus vaccines had been administered.
