ARCHIVED - Valencian Community adds new record of infections: Covid update January 7
The province of Alicante has registered more than 10,000 new cases
With the sixth wave of the pandemic running rampant across Spain, Alicante has accelerated its vaccination campaign by offering the booster dose to all those aged over 50 while at the same time trying to avoid any further restrictions in the community. Despite this, the Valencian region has broken yet another infection record in the first days of the new year.
Coronavirus cases
The Valencian Community reported 28,846 new Covid infections on Friday January 7, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 712,986.
By province, 4,112 new positives have been registered in Castellón, 10,116 in Alicante and 14,616 in Valencia, according to data provided by the regional department of health.
The number of unassigned cases stands at three.
According to the data, there are currently 106,980 active cases, which represents 14.77% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 1,184 people admitted to hospital with Covid, 190 of them in the ICU: 177 in the province of Castellón, 27 in the ICU; 396 in the province of Alicante, 74 of them in the ICU; and 611 in the province of Valencia, 89 in the ICU.
Since the start of the health crisis, 14,200 patients have been discharged from hospital and some 609,250 people in total have overcome the disease.
By provinces, the discharges are distributed as follows: 68,109 in Castellón, 219,818 in Alicante and 321,267 in Valencia. The total of unassigned registrations remains at 56.
A further 12 Covid-related deaths have been reported up until Wednesday January 5, bringing the overall death toll to 8,197: 925 in the province of Castellón, 3,149 in Alicante and 4,123 in the province of Valencia.
The deceased this week are seven women, aged between 69 and 90 years, and five men, aged between 64 and 86.
Vaccination data
A total of 4,265,296 people have now been fully immunised against Covid in the Valencian Community. To date, 9,784,304 coronavirus vaccines have been administered.
