Manchester to Lanzarote flight diverted twice before eventually landing in Alicante
Exhausted passengers were driven to Benidorm where they had to queue for hours for a hotel room
Jet2 passengers travelling from Manchester to Lanzarote suffered through not one but two diversions during an hours-long journey that eventually took them 1,500 miles away from their intended holiday destination. Bad weather on Saturday October 21 forced the LS981 flight to originally divert to Tenerife before the plane again took to the air and flew to Alicante.
From here, the disgruntled passengers, many of whom were travelling with small children, were put on a bus and driven to Benidorm, where the airline had secured a hotel.
"We waited 40 minutes for our luggage, 30 minutes to get a coach and when we finally arrived in Benidorm at 5.15am we had to queue in the cold to get a room in the hotel," one passenger said.
"The hotel is right on the Benidorm strip filled with drunken revellers on a Saturday night. This flight is filled with children," he added.
The man and his family were finally given a room at 7.30am, only to be told they would have to check out again by noon.
"We all expect delays and accepted the diversion but to fly back three hours on a four hour flight is ridiculous," he added. "It's worth pointing out here that the crew and the reps were friendly and respectful.
"I just want a resolution so that we can go on our family holiday."
Jet2 blamed "adverse weather conditions" for the diversions and apologised to passengers for the "enormous inconvenience" they suffered.
"We provided customers with hotel accommodation, and our teams have been working tirelessly to look after everyone. We can confirm that the flight is due to depart to Lanzarote this evening," the airline said in a statement.
