ARCHIVED - Lorca residents urged to repair damaged houses ahead of September festival
Homeowners in Lorca are asked to take advantage of the low volume of traffic to carry out necessary repairs

The owners of homes in the old part of Lorca are currently receiving official orders to repair any damage to roofs, cornices and facades ahead of the Feria de Lorca next month, when hundreds of visitors are expected to descend on the city and explore its historical quarters.
“This is the case of facades or eaves from which fragments can be detached that could fall onto public roads. In that case, the intervention is carried out as soon as possible, removing all loose material or any in danger of falling and the area is cordoned off,” the councillor for Urban Planning, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, reiterated.
Last year, 238 execution orders were issued from the City Council's urban intervention service requiring the repair of facades, cleaning of lots and fencing. This year, owners are being asked to reinforce their fencing and have been warned to avoid creating easy access to their land if possible, as burglaries have skyrocketed in Lorca and surrounding areas lately.
The council is not resting on its laurels either and preparations are already underway to ensure Lorca is in tiptop condition for September’s celebrations: Calle Donis, perpendicular to Vicente Ruiz Llamas, was closed off on Wednesday August 17 for repair works on the roof and facade of a derelict house. And the cleaning of Lorca’s ramblas has been brought forward in anticipation of heavy rains in the coming weeks.
The regional authorities are keen to take advantage of the diminished traffic on the roads during August to perform any touch-ups or repairs, and the City Council actually uses drones that closely monitor any deterioration to the buildings from the sky. In this way, “the inspections are continuous not only in the old town,” the mayor explained.
Particular attention is paid any time there are storms and if the owners of damaged buildings don’t comply with the repairs within a stipulated time period, the Council will step in and send on the bill.
