ARCHIVED - Largest illuminated Christmas ball in Spain goes up in flames in Alicante
The 12-metre high centrepiece of Alicante city's festive decorations caught fire due to a short circuit

The biggest illuminated Christmas ball in Spain – an enormous 12-metre bauble installed in Alicante city centre – burst into flames on Thursday evening, December 8, just over a fortnight after it was unveiled.
The giant ball is made up of 8,000 lights and it's believed the fire was caused by a short circuit. Centrepiece of the city's 1.3 million euros festive illuminations, the ball is located at one end of the busy Explanada de España and has two entrances so that the public can enjoy a light and sound show from the inside. Thankfully nobody was hurt when part of the structure went up in flames at around 9.30pm.
Alicante fire crews spent half an hour extinguishing the flames. As yet, there has been no statement from the city council regarding the future of the Christmas ball.
Alicante's dazzling display also includes the largest Nativity Scene in the world, certified by the Guinness Book of Records. It features the Three Wise Men, the tallest of which is Balthazar at 16 metres, followed by Gaspar (15.6 metres) and Melchior (11). However, the most monumental figure, Saint Joseph, reaches 18.1 metres with his staff, and the Virgin Mary measures 10.5.
