While tourism in much of the Costa Cálida relies almost exclusively on the busy summer months, in the Mar Menor area and on the golf resorts within easy driving distance the opposite is true!
Golf courses, of course, are open all year round, and in fact many golfers planning a trip to sunny Spain prefer to avoid the heat of summer and enjoy a little sunshine in during the autumn, winter and spring. This is when for early starters 27 or even 36 holes are feasible on a variety of courses including desert and Mediterranean landscaping, Nicklaus and Dave Thomas designed layouts and interesting challenges for all, whether playing off scratch or with a high handicap!
At the same time, the calm water and prevailing breezes of the Mar Menor, the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe, mean that sailors and kitesurfers flock to the area throughout the year. Numerous international competitions are held around the lagoon, but it is also an ideal place for beginners to learn the skills needed to become proficient in various water sports – the maximum depth of the Mar Menor is only 6 metres!
One of the towns benefitting most from this year-round activity is Los Alcázares. This is not a town where the seafront restaurants shut from autumn until Easter, as is shown by the range of restaurants to be found in the centre and in the popular expat area of Los Narejos: the international nature of the community is shown by the list of Top 20 Restaurants on TripAdvisor, which features local Mediterranean cuisine (don't miss out on the Mar Menor seafood!) alongside Indian, Mexican, Chineses, Bulgarian, Italian, British and Dutch restaurants as well as at least one Irish bar!

Nearby golf courses
Equally important for many, the choice of golf courses within easy driving distance is, quite simply, enormous. The best-known are the three at La Manga Club, around half an hour ago, but the emergence of golf resorts in Murcia around 25 years ago means that there is a proliferation of options, some just a 3-wood and a goof 5-iron away! The closest are La Serena, Mar Menor Golf Resort and Roda Golf, and other popular options are La Torre, Los Saurines, El Valle and Terrazas de la Torre.
Still under an hour away are the Condado de Alhama Signature course, Hacienda del Álamo and Camposol, still all in the Region of Murcia, and only a few kilometres north you’re in the southern Costa Blanca, where the nearest courses are Lo Romero, Las Ramblas, Villamartín, Campoamor and Las Colinas!
