Fans of the hit Korean show insist that it is based in a housing complex in Alicante
The hit Netflix drama series Squid Game which features cash-strapped individuals competing in a range of children’s games that can have deadly consequences has taken the world by storm. On the show, contestants battle to win a huge cash prize, but if they lose, they die.

Rumoured to be the platform’s most successful production to date, eagle-eyed viewers of the Squid Game have come together online to suggest that the famous multi-coloured stairs which contestants climb in every episode have actually been inspired by a housing complex called Muralla Roja de Calpe in Alicante.

Designed by world-renowned architect Ricardo Boffil, the complex holds 50 private apartments that share several interconnected patios.
The building has stood in the Valencian town for almost forty years, but it is unknown whether the Korean creator of the smash-hit show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, ever visited Alicante.
